Tel Aviv Day! July 23, 2012

Hello!

There is only one way to describe today: Indepdence day! At least this morning was for sure was independence day. We began our day by heading to Tel Aviv and going to Disingoff’s home-turned museum which was used on May 14, 1948 to declare Israel as a state/ country. There we watched a movie about the establishment of Tel Aviv in 1909 and how it blossomed into an incredible metropolis over the next 60 years. Then we made our way into the actual room where David Ben Gurion declared the state on national and international radio and TV. It was interesting to see how small the room was and to see it set up exactly as it was just over 60 years ago. We were informed about the never ending challenges that seemed to prevent the establishment of the state. From the museum we went to Rabin Square, where Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin was assasinated in 1995 during a Rally. We were challenged by Binyamin to go over to people and ask where they were when Rabin was killed, similar to our engrained memory of Sept 11. We also enjoyed a delicious falafel lunch. After lunch we got on the bus and went to Yaffo/Jaffa, an ancient city located north of Tel Aviv. There we got to walk around the old city and then shop in the shuk there. As a treat, once we finished in the market, we headed over to the beach (just 2 min away) for a small ice cream party! Then we made our way back to Yad Binyamin for dinner and a deep program about Judaism and relationships. I think we all gained a lot from the program.
